Five Execution Priorities for AI-Enabled Asian Retail

Experience, value, health, digital and AI must work as one operating system.

IGD highlights experience, value, AI, health and digital as defining themes for Asian grocery in 2026. AI creates value when embedded in operations and customer journeys.

IGD expects Asia’s grocery retail market to reach $4.6 trillion by 2030 and frames 2026 around five themes: experience, value, AI, health and digital. Adoption differs because the region spans very different income levels, demographics and retail maturity.

Value and experience are not opposites. EDLP and private label can protect shopper value and retailer margin, while physical stores must still create compelling reasons to visit and return.

AI is moving into automated stores, in-store translation, personalization and operating decisions. Its commercial value appears when it connects with inventory, ordering, pricing, promotion and staff workflows.

For Computer Vision AI, recognition accuracy is only an input. Retailers should measure stockout and display-gap reduction, new-product visibility, price and campaign execution, issue-resolution time and sales impact.

A scalable pilot tests technology and operating change together, with representative stores, baselines, user roles, intervention processes and POS or inventory connections designed from the start.
